Highlands United was founded in March 2022 by Joshua Stattenfield. The team was created to represent San Mateo County, and provide more opportunities for adult soccer players interested in playing on the peninsula. The name Highlands United was named after the team’s home field at Highlands Park, San Carlos. The name is also symbolic as it refers to the goal of the team; which is to unite San Mateo County, also known as “the Highlands”. The original colors of Highlands United were red, blue, white and black.
On March 20th 2022, Highlands United played their first game against the soccer team Jasa RWC U23 squad, and lost 3-1. But soon after, Highlands United started running pick ups at Highlands Park in San Carlos.
In April of 2022, Highlands United started playing in a Sunday league team called the Mid-Peninsula Soccer League (Redwood City, CA). During this preseason, Highlands United merged with Cuervos FC, a local Sunday league team run by Jaime Garcia. The two teams played under the name Cuervos FC. The Cuervos finished their first season in 2nd place but lost in the first round of playoffs 3-2.
Shortly after beginning play in spring of 2022, Highlands United entered a mens and coed 7v7 team into the San Carlos recreational league. The men's 7v7 team won the league for their first season, and finished in 4th place in the winter. The coed team finished in 2nd place for both the summer and the winter seasons.
The combined squad played together for 2 seasons under the name Cuervos FC (from summer 2022-fall/winter 2022-2023). After losing in the first round of playoffs in their first season, the Cuervos made it to the playoff final during their second season. The team devistatingly lost the final 2-0.
After the completion of the 2nd season together, Highlands United and Cuervos FC went their separate ways. Highlands United was promoted to the premier division at the Mid-Peninsula Soccer League while Cuervos FC stayed in the first division. Highlands United has currently started playing their first season in March 2023.
The Future of Highlands United is unknown. The team will continue to play in Sunday leagues while it looks to move to a regional league. If you are interested in helping, please contact us!
